Spotting is just a very light bleeding. The blood spot is similar to the spot that normally occurs at very start or at the latest stage of monthly period. The color may vary from pink to red and sometimes it can be color brown just like the color of dried blood. There can be many factors that cause pregnancy spotting.

There are more blood flows at the cervix during pregnancy, so it is just normal to notice some blood spots after the intercourse. For the same reason a spotting after the internal examination or after a Pap smear may also occur. Infections may also be one of the causes of spotting.
The spotting may not be related to pregnancy but instead due to vaginal infection like yeast infection. Sexually transmitted infection may like Chlamydia or herpes may also cause spotting. These infections cause irritation and make your cervix inflamed which further cause spotting. Other pregnant women may also experience spotting during the time that she will be nearly on labor stage.
